With Texas in its early stages of recovery following the devastation of the winter storm, the Bidens are scheduled to visit the state a week after the president declared a state of emergency.
“The President will meet with local leaders to discuss the winter storm, relief efforts, progress toward recovery and the incredible resilience shown by the people of Houston and Texas,” said White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki in a press briefing on Tuesday.
Psaki mentioned that President Biden is also scheduled to visit an unnamed COVID health and vaccine distribution center.
Biden’s trip to Texas marks his first time in the state since taking the presidency last month.
According to the Washington Post, 58 people died as a result of the failure of the state’s energy system (ERCOT) amid the Texas winter storm. After ERCOT implemented rolling power outages, many were left without power for up to 48 hours.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has since launched an investigation of ERCOT to root out those responsible for the grid’s failure.
